A board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain management physician, Dr. Thomas P. Pontinen welcomes patients at MAPS – Midwest Anesthesia Pain Specialists in Illinois. He established the practice in 2014 alongside his partner and dear friend Darrel Saldanha, MD. MAPS – Midwest Anesthesia Pain Specialists is one of the largest practices of its kind in the state of Illinois. MAPS has offices in Chicago, Des Plaines, Franklin Park, Hazel Crest, and Woodridge, IL. Dr. Pontinen also practices at several local hospitals, including Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, IL and AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, IL. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Pontinen is a published author of journal articles and textbook chapters, prolific presenter, principal investigator in FDA trails, as well as active researcher on chronic wound pain. Dr. Thomas P. Pontinen is a 2008-graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, MN. His postgraduate training includes his general surgery residency served at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA (2008 – 2010), as well as his anesthesiology residency performed at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, IL (2010 – 2013), where he also conducted his pain management fellowship (2013 – 2014). Dr. Pontinen completed his undergraduate education, i.e., his Magna Cum Laude Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management and Advertising, at the University of St Thomas in St. Paul, MN (2003). He attained board certification in anesthesiology and pain management with the American Board of Anesthesiology.
